Superheroes

May 6th, 2003 · No Comments

Via (ahem) “Thomas Anderson” at Anarchismo, I see that England now has an honest-to-God superhero. It’s about time. Why don’t more people do this stuff, man? We’ve got enough rich eccentrics in this country. Surely in a culture so saturated with the superheroic archetype, one or two have gotten it into their heads to train in the martial arts, buy some high tech gadgetry, and fight crime…

Speaking of Mr. Anderson, if you haven’t already, check out The Animatrix: the last of four free episodes just went online.

A friend at work has tipped me off to the interesting work of one John Shelton Lawrence. Lawrence is author, most recently, of Captain America and the Crusade against Evil: The Dilemma of Zealous Nationalism. I’ve just borrowed a copy of his earlier The Myth of the American Superhero and am looking forward to digging in. Especially relevant as it becomes increasingly clear that our president is cribbing his lines from Rambo flicks (“let’s just say they’re no longer a threat…”) and believes that the executive branch is his own personal Batcave. Just think what a badass he’d be if he hadn’t gone AWOL.

Of course, the best blogospheric source for all things superheroic remains Franklin’s Findings.
