This Is a Film About Trickery and Fraud

June 3rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

After hearing wonderful things about it for something like a decade (notably an effusive appreciation by Robert Anton Wilson that I read back in high school) I finally got around to seeing Orson Welles’ fantastic F for Fake this weekend. It instantly broke into my top five. Get yourself a copy or find a screening forthwith.

Yes! A great film. It is the fourth must-see Welles (after “Citizen Kane,” “The Magnificent Ambersons” and “Touch of Evil”).

Actually, I’d say the must-sees are “Kane”, “Touch of Evil” and “The Trial”. Welles himself said that “The Trial” was his best film, and I often think he was right. The opening is a little hokey, but after that, it’s the best Kafka adaptation ever—really pitch-perfect in capturing Kafka’s sexuality, dreamy-but-concrete tone, and most important, his black comedy. Anthony Perkins, as K, also does a great job of constantly reminding us that K is not a saintly victim, but a peevish pill, which makes the miasma of guilt and shame that hang over the novel make far more sense than in other adaptations.
