I can’t be the only one who saw the creepily Mickey Mouse–ish masks worn by riot police in Tblisi and immediately started humming the theme from Brazil. But thinking about one of my favorite movies also brought to mind the following exchange from the film, which now seems disconcertingly familiar:


Jill: Doesn’t it bother you the sort of things you do at Information Retrieval?

Sam: I suppose you’d rather have terrorists.


Now, that’s some serious reductio creep for you: Our actual, “serious” political debates now resemble punchlines from dystopian satire. Awesome. Wake me when it’s 2008.

    Or characters from dystopian video games. They also look a lot like the Civil Protection officers from Half-Life 2. Here is an example if you’ve never played.
