It looks like Reason is about to become one more magazine that exists as a side project to a wildly popular group blog. Or at least, I can only assume that with the combination of wit and intellect on staff, it’s about to become wildly popular.

Also posted at Laissez Faire Books. A few weeks back, I wrote a somewhat intemperate attack on a National Review article, penned by Stan Kurtz, opposing gay marriage. I must confess no small measure of surprise to find this piece now cited by Kurtz himself, as a gambit in Kurtz’s ongoing debate with Andrew Sullivan. […]

His blogesty links to this WaPo piece, which reports that besieged Louisiana Senate candidate Mary Landrieu, a Democrat, turned over a $1000 donation from Handgun Control International to a hunting group, lest there be any confusion about her support for gun rights. Now, I have to wonderâ?¦ is that really legal? Can a candidate decide […]

I’m still apparently in certain of NYU’s databases, and get occasional emails broadcast to the student body. Here’s the latest one: Please be advised that Ansell Healthcare Incorporated, a manufacturer of latex condoms, is initiating a voluntary recall of LIFESTYLES ASSORTED COLORS AND FLAVORS condoms. [….] If you are in possession of these condoms, which […]

An excellent deconstruction of an unworthy review of Stephen Pinker’s The Blank Slate — from Mark Powers, whose blog is generally quite good. Shame about the review, since I otherwise rather like Blackburn. I was similarly disappointed not too long ago when I read a really grossly vicious, misleading, dishonest, and maybe even slanderous review […]

John Maynard Keynes once observed that the â??ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly believed. Indeed, the world is ruled by little elseâ?¦. Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler […]

Sully asks readers to point out little Sontags who blasphemously enclose the phrase “war on terror” in scare quotes, or what he takes to be scare quotes. (Those last are plain vanilla quotation marks, though I’ll confess that I may possibly harbor some further ironic intent.) He writes: “I wonder what part of the phrase […]

Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be shocked by any conceivable abuse of the odious DMCA, Declan forwards word that FatWallet.com is being threatened with legal action for posting the sale prices offered by various retailers. Yup, you read that right. A user posted price comparisons, and the site’s operators got nastygrams insisting the […]
