Apologies for the radio silence; I’ve just returned from a Liberty Fund colloquium in Guatemala. I should probably post on some of the interesting discussion there, but what I actually find myself turning over and over in my head is: Why does everyone have the same goddamn black, dark-grey, or navy blue roller suitcase? It […]

Well, this is depressing. Via Daily Kos, I come across the following quotation: Like every other man of intelligence and education, I do believe in organic evolution. It surprises me that at this late date such questions should be raised. Some wacky contemporary Christian-basher like Richard Dawkins, right? Actually, way back in 1922, it appears […]

Thumbs, Still Your Twitching

Alas, it looks as though I’ll be out of town for the VideoGame Expo that comes to town this weekend, but those of you remaining should check it out. I’d really go more out of curiosity than fandom—I haven’t regularly played video games since high school. So something like this is probably more my speed.

No-Point Conversion
August 23rd, 2005 · 1 Comment
Arthur Silber works up more anger than I can manage over the Volokh Conspiracy debate on homosexual “conversion,” but his basic points strike me as right on. The core problem here is that Eugene is ultimately making a pretty trivial point, but framing it in the context of rebutting the idea that it’s a “myth” […]

Amazon: Not Just Stimulating Your Mind Anymore

Who knew Amazon.com had solid selection of vibrators, and at some truly incredible discounts. Rabbits (the iPod of vibrators) run $35–$48 for models that ordinarly go for $80–$120. And you can apparently pick up some less chi-chi $20 models for under a dollar. How can they do that? They’re not, umm… used, are they?

Network Theory and the Blogoosphere

So, a couple weeks back I did a panel for a seminar run by the Institute for Humane Studies, and ended up chatting afterward with a couple of the students and Dan Drezner. I mentioned in passing that I’d done a previous panel a year back on the application of social network theory—about which I’d […]

Talking and Speaking
August 15th, 2005 · Comments Off on Talking and Speaking
So, if you’d asked me earlier today what speak and talk mean (in their verb forms), I probably would’ve said that, barring idiomatic constructions (you can talk someone into doing something, but not speak them into it) they’re pretty much exact synonyms. Or at any rate, I would’ve been hard pressed to articulate any difference […]

Climbing Mount Unbloggable

So, apparently my post below on evolution and the psychology of religious belief has kicked off a little debate over at The Panda’s Thumb. For the most part, I think Tim Sandefur’s reply says what needed to be said, but let me just add something brief about the point of the original post. My point […]
