The Memory’s First to Go

February 24th, 2008 · 4 Comments

If you’d asked me yesterday, I would have sworn up and down that I got into Amon Tobin way back in high school, on the strength of his album Supermodified. I just noticed that Supermodified was released in 2000, when I was already a couple years in at NYU. Go figure. Now I’m trying to figure out whether I was, in fact, listening to Tobin in high school, but got into him through Bricolage (the only one released early enough for that to be the case), or whether I’ve just retconned when I started listening to him somehow. Vaguely worried this is the start of some Dark City–style unraveling of the elaborate false history concocted by the alien experimenters who run my world.

Well, if you had to pick an artist likely to be the product of elaborate alien false history experiments, Tobin would definitely be at the top of the list.

The memory is the second thing to go.

I forget what the first thing is.

It’s never my memory, just glitches in the Matrix. Amazing how many there are…
