Halloween Roundup

Apart from being enormous fun on their own, Halloween parties always provide a little snapshot of the Zeitgeist by way of the costumes chosen. A few themes jumped out at me from this weekend’s shindig.

Superheroes and comics characters are always popular, but I did notice that this year they were almost all Marvel characters: The Punisher, Doctor Doom, Captain America (complete with bullet-wound from recent assassination) and an awesome, awesome Galactus. (Bonus: Doom v. Galactus! Now sort of sorry we didn’t stage some kind of pan-Marvel brawl scene…)

As I predicted in a previous post, there were also a number of “Matryoshka Costumes“: a Vampire Tooth Fairy, George Washington as Sexy Kitten (pictured with Our Savior General Petraeus), and a Slutty-Zombie–Annie Hall.

Viral internet memes were also well represented, among them: more than one LOLcat, Werewolf Barmitzvah, and Dick in a Box (though perhaps not the “Dick” you were expecting).

I suppose my costume (the current Doctor Who) technically falls under the “Marvel comics characters” rubric, as the Time Lord has indeed had his own Marvel series, but I note that only my fetching companion had the Zeitgeist trifecta with her Black Cat–as-LOLcat costume.

Awesome. I’m also the tenth Doctor this Halloween; ran into a ninth Doctor at a party this weekend: http://madbard.livejournal.com/908348.html

I found that when I take the wig off my Snape costume and drop my wand, I turn into Neo.

After last year’s slut-o-ween trend reached its apotheosis in my roommate’s slutty ghost costume (a sheet over the head with eyeholes, trimmed to mid-thigh), a new trend was bound to emerge.

John Cain wins the Zeitgeist contest.

No way, Sangfroid. That goes to either the many takes on Gen. Petraeus or LOLcats.

As usual the halloween costumes at your party are ridiculously amazing.
