Via roomie Dave, a group called Freedom Watch has produced a series of ads urging the importance of staying in Iraq.
Their nominal argument (for some appropriately loose sense of that term) is something along the lines of: 9/11! Iraq! 9/11! Iraq! We’re going to keep mentioning these things in close proximity! Even at this late date, that will be enough to convince a few of you there’s some coherent connection, right?
The subtext, and actual argument, is that a lot of people have made serious sacrifices in this war, and isn’t it awfully mean to salt the wound by passing public verdict that it was all just a terrible waste? I’m not without sympathy on this front, but not quite so much sympathy that I think it’s worth demanding more such sacrifices to prolong some comforting illusions about the ones already made.

Have you heard of sunk costs?

Yes. They’re what the irrational fail to discount.
