With Their Pristine Moderate Liberal Minds

The Decemberists—whose show this Friday I’m ultra-psyched for—are on All Things Considered this afternoon; check it out.

In a related vein: I note that both they and the Dresden Dolls have a certain self-conscious Brecht/Weill feel to their music. One more and I’ve got the requisite journalist’s three for a full-blown trend. Nominees?

Nellie McKay is doing the Threepenny Opera on Broadway, does that complete your Brecht / Weill trifecta? Or does actual Brecht / Weill not count?

Hmm, not sure… McKay’s list of influences reads like a party shuffle, so it seems like cheating to cite her.

I’m not really sure I agree with your thesis, but if you were really clever I think you could make an argument for the Fiery Furnaces.

In a related vein, listening to anything interesting these days (Decembrists’ aside)?…

This might get me drawn and quartered in certain circles, but I nominate the Arcade Fire.

Marc, they’ll have to octave both of us, not just quarter you. Arcade Fire it is.
