By way of belated congratulations to happy newlyweds Megan and Peter, I thought I’d reproduce here the short passage I read at the wedding this weekend, and which (with some reservations about “identical in opinions”) fits them to a T:

What marriage may be in the case of two persons of cultivated faculties, identical in opinions and purposes, between whom there exists that best kind of equality, similarity of powers and capacities with reciprocal superiority in them — so that each can enjoy the luxury of looking up to the other, and can have alternately the pleasure of leading and of being led in the path of development — I will not attempt to describe. To those who can conceive it, there is no need; to those who cannot, it would appear the dream of an enthusiast.
-John Stuart Mill, The Subjection of Women

Scanlon, whose book What We Owe to Each Other had exerted a profound influence on my moral thinking. (Given my substantive commitments, this may or may not be a source of horror to Prof. Scanlon.) Anyway, I found myself feeling a pang of regret that I don’t much do posts like that anymore. Since I now have a job that encourages me to spend long stretches reading and thinking if necessary, as opposed to obsessively following the news cycle and filing a thousand words or so every day, I figure it might behoove me to try and do a few of those every now and again. Watch for thoughts once I get through Amartya Sen’s The Idea of Justice.

Speaking of assessing people’s productivity in society, I suppose this is as good a time as any to announce publicly that at the end of the month I’ll be rejoining the ranks of the gainfully employed, with the delightfully vague title of Research Fellow at the Cato Institute. My mandate will be fairly open-ended: Basically, they offered me the chance to hang around with a bunch of smart people and split my time between the sort of musing you’re accustomed to here, working on a book project I had to backburner a while back, and doing the sort of long-form reported stories that traditional journalistic outlets seem less and less willing to back. I jumped as soon as I persuaded myself the offer wasn’t some kind of cruel monkey torture.

From y’all’s perspective, this just means I’ll probably be putting out more copy, since I’ll actually be going into an office with a regular schedule, and you’ll probably be seeing my stuff crop up in more places. When I’m doing journalism, in the event anyone’s concerned, I’ll consider myself just as strongly bound by journalistic norms as I would be writing for a newspaper or magazine. And of course, to coincide with the change, I’ll be changing my ringtone from Soul Coughing’s “Freelancer” to this highly appropriate ditty.

So, I’m enjoying the opportunity to start doing some freelancing and probably going to take a couple more weeks enjoying the liberty to do a bunch of that. But fairly soon, I’m probably going to have to start looking for something a bit more stable. Since I’m already in DC, since this is where I know people and (a few) people know me, and since this is where publications where my skill set is relevant tend to be concentrated, I expect I’ll mostly be looking in DC. However, much as I love (love, love) my apartment, I would for various reasons be open to the idea of returning to New York.

I don’t expect I’ll do a very active search there, since it seems like something of a longshot. But I figure there’s no reason not to send up a flare. So on the off chance I’ve got a NY-based reader who’s been dying to hire a political journalist/blogger with my weird mix of interests—and it’s the sort of position that would justify packing up my life and hauling all my earthly possessions up I-95—drop a line.

This weekend I got to seriously considering whether perhaps I hadn’t better just pack it in and make a fresh start in some less doomed, more remunerative industry—which at present is pretty much anything short of buggy-whip manufacture. Maybe it’s failure of imagination, but to my own astonishment, I realized I was hard pressed to come up with anything else I thought I could stomach doing, at least without another five or so years of schooling. Logically, I should probably find this depressing; instead, I find it oddly reassuring. Anyone who’s found himself misting up to Carl Dennis’ “The God Who Loves You” will have a sense of what I mean.

Addendum: A commenter objects that the Internet is not displacing more “worthy” activities (reading Proust, socializing) but merely providing a new way to do these things. Lest there be any unclarity, my agreement is not some paper-fetishism about the superiority of hardbacks to ebooks. What I do think is true is that the very vastness of options the Internet brings together can make it hard—makes it harder for someone like me, anyway—to sustain focus on any one thing. I find it a lot harder these days to just sit for an hour with a book—pixel or pulp—and just focus on it for a hour straight. And I think part of that is attributable to the Net.

You know, if it’s good enough for Marcy Wheeler, I may as well mention that I’m probably going to be living the penurious freelancer life for at least a few weeks while I figure out what I want to do post Condé-layoffs. I’m also going to be blogging here much more regularly in my newly copious free time. So if you’ve gotten a few bucks worth of amusement or food for thought here over the years and feel like harnessing the power of the market to signal as much, now might be a propitious time to coinsider hitting the PayPal tip jar on the right-hand menu. I’m not about to start auctioning off organs or anything, but a slightly thicker cushion would make the next month or so easier. Similarly, if you’re an editor with a Julian Sanchez–shaped hole in your featurewell, I happen to be one of the world’s leading suppliers of Julian Sanchez. If this were a public radio pledge drive, I’d close with dark intimations that I may have to shutter the blog if funds are not forthcoming—but who am I kidding? I’m logorrheic narcissist, and I’m going to keep doing this for free either way. But bear in mind, the less financial pressure I’m under to take the first available Real Job, the more time I have to ramble on here.

Well, good news and bad news, dear readers. The bad news is that, while it’s been fun and interesting to hop aboard an expanding publication known primarily for its hard tech coverage, and to try to bring their trademark geeky rigor to the task of reporting on tech policy and politics, it also turns out not to be the most stable gig in the world right now—what with most formerly “expanding” journalistic enterprises well into “contracting” mode. So if you haven’t been following my work over there and are at all curious what I’ve been getting up to over at Ars Technica‘s policy channel, well, you’ve got about a week left.

No hard feelings there; a lot of publications are having to ask “what’s the absolute core stuff we need to do to stay afloat right now?” For a site like Ars, “political reporting” wasn’t going to be at the top of the list—and they still have razor sharp folks like Nate Anderson who can make sure they stay on top of the most important policy stories. So they made precisely the same call I would’ve had I been running the show. And no regrets either: I’d never expected to stay a tech journalist indefinitely, but seven months wearing that hat has given me a chance to get to know a ton of clever people, drill deeper into some specific issues of interest to me, and get the sort of healthy writing discipline that you can probably only learn from either daily reporting or a paid dominatrix. It’s been a pleasure to get to meet folks like Clint, Ben, & the Jons, and inshallah one of these days I’ll have a chance to grab a beer with Ken & Jacqui & Eric, who I’ve managed to work with these past months without actually ever meeting in the flesh. That said, I got what came for from the experience, and I’m perfectly happy to try something new now

Which brings us to what I at least hope folks bothering to cast an eyeball here will regard as good news: Once I’ve wrapped up at Ars, I can take a few weeks to catch up on my reading and unload the growing backlog of blog posts about things-not-tech that I just didn’t have time to write while there. Cybersecurity is fascinating in its own way, but I won’t pretend I haven’t missed the odd philosophical thumbsucker—of which I have a few in reserve. I think of it as an involuntary but not unwelcome vacation while I figure out what I’d like to do next. In the meantime, my occupation is reader/blogger/flaneur. Stay tuned.

In the interest of deterring my own future self from defecting from my longstanding scheme to quit smoking at 30, I’m announcing publicly that I’m now officially smoke-free. While I’d like to believe it’s possible for even ex-smokers to—eventually—enjoy the occasional cigarette without careening into a life of sin and degradation, I’m thinking that it needs to be a complete ban for at least the first year to avoid the risk of backsliding into regular smoking. Which means if you spot me skulking about somewhere with a cigarette, you are permitted—indeed, encouraged—to publicly ridicule me. You should take pictures with your camera-phone and send it to all your Twitter buddies with a snarky caption mocking my pathetic akrasia.

Since I’ve been skimming various anti-smoking sites to get a sense of the withdrawal timeline, however, let me add a corollary: If I ever become one of those chirpy, preening ex-smokers who can’t stop nattering about the million ways they’re better, happier, healthier people since they came to Jesus and abandoned the foul weed (And started running! Oh my God, do you run? It’s the best thing I ever did!) do us both a favor and bludgeon me with a rusty pipe. I’m stopping because the stuff does tend to kill you eventually, and as best I can determine, quitting by 30 leaves your body with a pretty good chance of repairing itself without serious long-term consequences. Assuming that happens, I’ll be delighted I got away with smoking for a decade and change, because (like so many other things in life) it’s really quite nice except for the killing-you part.
