It’s come to my attention that some of you reading this on a feed don’t want to miss the little “Quick Hits” links up in the sidebar, where I stick stories I think others might be interested in, but about which I don’t have a whole lot of deep thoughts to add. At the risk of depriving people of any reason to come check out the redesign, there actually is a feed, since the “Quick Hits” are just the stories I’ve flagged on Google Reader. That feed is here.

So, I’ve started in on the site redesign, which will involve shifting to the WordPress content management system. I still have a lot of work to do in terms of creating new logo art, tweaking the colors, etcetera, etcetera. But the basic layout I’m planning to go with is here if folk have thoughts/advice/cries of horror.

Don’t worry, there will be actual regular content here again soon. I’m working on a site redesign, as well as various outside pieces, so check back at the end of the week and this place will probably look utterly different. At that point, I’ll actually have time to start writing here regularly again.

I’m tempted to just let the redesign be a surprise, but it seems silly to deprive myself of the wisdom of people who actually know something about design, if there are any of you out there. So, below the fold (for those of you who prefer surprises) a very, very rough/tentative mockup of what the new look of the blog might be. I don’t need specific comments at this stage, since I guarantee that the final product will look quite different—this is just something I tossed together as a quick-and-dirty outline.

Update: Made some minor modifications for legibility. Still trying out various looks, so don’t panic if you hate this one.

Update II: Never mind. It’s obviously a bit silly to ask for comments at this stage of the process, and at the level of generality I was going for. Rest assured that none of the things people actually find awful about the mockup ever had any risk of making it into a real layout.

I’m getting set to do a redesign and relaunch of this website and blog, and I’m thinking it’s time to bid farewell to “Notes from the Lounge” and rechristen the enterprise with a title more fitted to its content. That’s a sufficiently personal thing that I’ll probably end up having to come up with a name myself, but if anyone has any brilliant thoughts — something short and catchy that evokes the hodgepodge of things I write about — suggestions (general or specific) are welcome. The current frontrunner is “The Experience Machine,” which I like better the more I think about it, and may ultimately be what I go with. But I’d be a poor blogger if I didn’t try to exploit the distributed intelligence of the Web before committing myself.

There are some cases where I’d like my Mac to use different programs to open certain files with different extensions, even when the underlying file type is the same. For instance. .RAR files and .CBR files are basically both just RAR archives, but I want the former to open with the appropriate extractor, while the latter open in a CBR viewer. But OSX seems to just ignore the extension and make its application associations based on the underlying file type. Anyone know how to fix this?
