		<description>It&#039;s hard also to ignore the role of empathy in the debate over torture. For all the shouting over principles, I often suspect that torture proponents just have a fundamentally different conception than I do of both what it means to be human and what it means to suffer.</description>

		<description>In general, idealists are more concerned with origins and pragmatists are more concerned with results. Obama once again shows himself to be a pragmatist.

In particular, the school strip search case opened my eyes. The words of the male justices indicated that none of them had a clue as to how traumatic the event was for the girl involved. That they relied so heavily own their own life experiences as males made the argument for diversity visceral to me for the first time, and gave me great empathy for Justice Ginsburg.</description>
