I'm thinking that your cycles are off.

1896-1932 - (McKinley through '20s Republicans) Conservative dominance

1932-1968 - (FDR - LBJ) Liberal dominance

1968-2008 - (Nixon-GWB) Conservative dominance

Setting aside the astrological nature of this parlor game for just a moment, I figure Obama and his successors have between now and 2048 to turn us into Denmark or Venezuela (depending on your assumptions).

I agree about not leaping to 'it's all different this time!' conclusions, but I think that the GOP does have a major long-term problem. They've made themselves the party of the White Confederacy. Blacks, hispanics, asians, gays, etc. are all not welcome. That's a big problem in a country in which those groups are growing.

Yeah, it's pretty fascinating how quickly the winds shift. That said, the only thing to really draw from this analysis is that we have absolutely no idea where things will head in the future. Trying to draw historical inferences based on the post-'60s, post-Watergate, post-Vietnam era is a total mug's game.
