I see three big things here:

First, Reid is attempting to set an extremely dangerous precedent, that the Senate has more than a very small amount of discretion in seating Senators. Bush vs. Gore should have taught him caution about that, and the next 8 years should have reinforced that. That's the sort of loophole that the GOP specializes in driving trains through.

Second, the GOP is threatening to fillibuster the seating of Al Franken until Coleman exhausts all possible appeals (which will be by Startdate alot.more.more). This helps them in that.

Third, after 8 years of servitude to Bush, *sshole Reid demonstrates that he *will shoot, but only at fellow Democrats. Considering that the success or failure of the Obma ('Democrats Control the Government!!!!!!') Administration will be threatened by GOP Senate obstructionism, Reid can't afford to make a rep for only shooting at his own side.

And it now looks like he's failing, so he attacked his own side, in a manner which would hurt his own side, and lost.
