I can't really see the relevance of a Watchmen movie, even competently done in today's times. It's influence as a graphic novel has left its imprints in so many stories, I suspect a film version can really give us anything thematically interesting that we have not already seen on the screen. "Watchmen" was like nothing before it, but there is a lot after it that is like it. While the novel holds up because of how well it is done, I just have serious reservations about a film being able to do so as well. Also, I feel sorry for any superhero story that has to follow "The Dark Knight."

3/6/9 -- counting to midnight. Though that may be a post-hoc call. Frankly, I'd expect the movie to do pretty damned well even if it sucked given the buzz and anticipation.

When I saw the trailer in front of Dark Knight, my first thought, on seeing the DC logo and then the scenes of Dr. Manhattan's origin, was "What, are they making a Captain Atom movie?"

Then I saw the Archie. "Duh!"

I'm worried though, that the March release date means that the studio has no confidence in the movie.

Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake is fine and all, but I don't see any reason to believe he can make a truly good movie.

What I've read is that "Under the Hood" will be a documentary (based on the book) through which some of the history is related; we may get snippets of Tales of the Black Freighter in the main film itself, but it will also be included as a separate animated film on the DVD release, possibly with an option to view the main film with fragments of the TotBF cartoon interspersed at the proper points.

The things I still worry about- can they make it long enough? There's an awful lot of story there even to put in 3 hours. Also, what will happen w/ all the little side stories? The newspaper vendor and his customers, the kid reading the pirate comic, the excerpts from "under the hood" in the back, etc. It's hard for me to see how that can be put in, but w/o that stuff it's just not as good. Also, I don't think that flash-backs of the sort we see, for example, w/ Rorcharch work as well in movies as they do in comics. And, I'm pretty sick of that slow-mo fighting stuff by now. It was neat once but it pretty old-hat now. We'll see. I'm still pretty skeptical.

It's just a cruel hoax, I'm sure. There has never been a good Alan Moore adaptation, and there never will be.
