Julian's stance is correct imho, Neil highlights the difference between leftish-liberals and libertarians on positive discrimination. How equal are we, now, really?

Common libertarian failing is to be excessively ahistorical and abstract. More convoluted views arise from understanding this failing. Ann's right to draw attention to this.

Turn down the heat, Ann and Ron need a cold shower, might get on better than over cocktails, er, wine, er..

Widespread and systematic discrimination flowing from a history of state-enforced racism is unacceptable and undermines the kind of background social equality that's necessary for a liberal society to function, but when we reach the point where this would not be the result of permitting the odd bigot to run his segregated business, then the balance of considerations tips in favor of allowing this, repugnant as we may find it.

I agree! And this is all well and good. But do you think we're there yet? Because when two identical resumes, one with a stereotypically black name like Jamal, and another with a most-likely-white name like Greg, can get statistically significant differences in the number of callbacks they get, we're not yet in 'the odd bigot' territory yet.
