I Look Into the Finance Box Just to Check My Status

October 24th, 2006 · 1 Comment

The ineffable Will Wilkinson (except, one supposes, by the nominal “Will Wilkinson,” allowing him to be at least briefly effed) has a fine piece in Aussie mag Policy on the trendy “arms race” attack on status competition. Reader’s of Will’s blog will recognize the basic argument: You can’t trust any schema that treats status as a zero-sum game in a world where the dimensions along which each of us may be top-dog (Head of my Warcraft guild! Star of Xena fanfic! Best battle-rapper in my area code!) multiply daily. But Will’s gift for the pithy example, the bon mot, the mot juste, and possibly even the Mott’s juice, are all on display here, making it well worth a gander. Or, like Will himself, at least a spare goose.

Indeed, Mott’s flows from my nipples like water from a tap. I am third best battle rapper in 202, but I keep it a secret.
