Self Inflicted Wounds

February 24th, 2005 · 1 Comment

At CPAC this weekend, I got talking with another journalist about the Wall Street Journal‘s dubious choice to hide its content behind a fee barrier, a decision which is gradually making it less relevant—since stories in the Journal are far less likely to be discussed in the blogosphere, to which other traditional media are increasingly looking as a sort of bellwether. Other, less established papers, have made the still more dubious assumption to follow suit on the grounds that “If the WSJ can make it work, so can we,” precisely when they need to be building their brand.

Anyway, apparently we’re not alone, because Adam Penenberg (of Shattered Glass fame) has a piece in Wired News noting that this is a growing meme. Time to open the floodgates, guys.

So does this mean we need a Ronald Reagan of the blogosphere to say: “Mr. Steiger, tear down this fee barrier”?
